Last week, I had my first storytime ever. I'm a Reference Librarian, but we all do some storytimes when they are part of a class tour. I was so nervous before because I don't have much experience with groups of children, but I got rave reviews from both the teacher of the class that came in for the story and my supervising librarian.
The Kindergarten class was going to the farmer's market later in the month on a field trip so I decided to do a farm animal theme. I thought I'd share the books since I have neighbors with kids and neighbors who are expecting. These were all fun, but I'll give a mini review of each.
I started with Book! Book! Book! because it is about farm animals who go to the library and have trouble communicating with the librarian. The kids liked it, but it had my least favorite illustrations of them all. I like bright, bold illustrations in children's books and the watercolor just didn't seem as eye-catching. But the kids liked it and laughed at the animals trying to talk to the librarian.
This one was my favorite. Marjorie the cow is depressed because she can't do handstands and ride bicycles like the other cows so the chickens get together and make it look like she laid an egg to make her feel better. The story is so funny and sweet at the same time, and it's a fun one to read aloud. The illustrations were really cute in this one too. Very bright colors.
This book is about a rooster who forgot how to crow, but still manages to save the farm from a fox. You get to make a lot of fun animal sounds while reading this one to kids, and they get a kick out of that.
Today was great. I met my co-workers, and they seem like a great bunch of people. I know it's always like that your first day, but this is the warmest welcome I've ever gotten at a job. I sat with a few different people at the different desks and observed. I hate when a line forms, and it looks like I'm just sitting there like a bump on a log. I'm happy that they're giving me lots of training up front though.
I'm exhausted so that's all folks!
It's a little overwhelming because I'm moving for the position, and Dan won't be able to come right away because of his thesis defense in March. I'm moving to an area where I have family though so I'll stay with my aunt for a few weeks until I find a place to live. She doesn't have internet access so I'm sure I'll find that apartment pretty quickly!!
Thanks to everyone that gave me advice and well wishes for my interview! It was really helpful and appreciated.
I'm happy to report that I have an interview for a Reference Librarian I (full-time!) position next week. Apparently my cover letter and resume actually grabbed someone's attention finally. Do any of you have some helpful advice for me?
I have to prepare and present a lesson plan for a basic internet skills class and write a statement about my experience with technology in the library and in personal life. I'm not too nervous about those since I'm just out of school and used to coming up with stuff like that. I am a little nervous because this is my first professional interview, and I don't know what to expect.
Wish me luck!
I turned in my last final project ever in library school today! Woohooo, I'm a librarian. Now I just have to find a job.
A bunch of stuff you probably don't care about:
1. Today was my first day back at school for the summer. The class won't be too bad, but there is a lot of assigned reading to do. It will be interesting though because it is about tween and teen library services.
2. My teacher kept calling Vista "Windows 07." The techno-savvy folks in the class all had to hold in the urge to laugh at her. This is my third class with her, and she grates on my nerves a little bit. She talks too much about nothing, which keeps us in class longer for no reason. We were there from 9-12, and probably spent only 1 hour on actual course-related stuff. That's not good when the class only meets 5 times. I don't care about your kids, your divorce, or why you hate email and refuse to answer it. Just teach, dammit!
3. In five weeks I will be an official (but unemployed) librarian!!
4. I forgot to reset the alarm for Dan when I left for class, and he woke up at 9:45. Oops... Thankfully his lab manager wasn't pissed. I guess we were up too late watching Buffy.
5. I wish I could drop out of school, quit my job, and watch Buffy while crocheting and sewing all day. I'm so addicted. And I'm completely in love with both Spike and Giles now.
I really want a job in the library field for experience before I finish my degree, but I don't think this one will work for me. One of the requirements:
clean driving record and willingness to drive a 32-foot bus
I wouldn't mind being a librarian on a bookmobile, but I'm not sure about driving it.
What's your dream career?

Well, I would have to say that being a librarian will be pretty close. The only career I think I would like more is writing, and I plan to work on that when I'm done with library school and working full time.
Well, I finally got an interview with a high school for a media specialist (school librarian) position. Woohoo! It's only half-time, but my county allows you to work half-time at two schools and get benefits just like a full-time employee. Now I just have to bite my nails until they call me to set up a time...
