Last week, I had my first storytime ever. I'm a Reference Librarian, but we all do some storytimes when they are part of a class tour. I was so nervous before because I don't have much experience with groups of children, but I got rave reviews from both the teacher of the class that came in for the story and my supervising librarian.
The Kindergarten class was going to the farmer's market later in the month on a field trip so I decided to do a farm animal theme. I thought I'd share the books since I have neighbors with kids and neighbors who are expecting. These were all fun, but I'll give a mini review of each.
I started with Book! Book! Book! because it is about farm animals who go to the library and have trouble communicating with the librarian. The kids liked it, but it had my least favorite illustrations of them all. I like bright, bold illustrations in children's books and the watercolor just didn't seem as eye-catching. But the kids liked it and laughed at the animals trying to talk to the librarian.
This one was my favorite. Marjorie the cow is depressed because she can't do handstands and ride bicycles like the other cows so the chickens get together and make it look like she laid an egg to make her feel better. The story is so funny and sweet at the same time, and it's a fun one to read aloud. The illustrations were really cute in this one too. Very bright colors.
This book is about a rooster who forgot how to crow, but still manages to save the farm from a fox. You get to make a lot of fun animal sounds while reading this one to kids, and they get a kick out of that.
It was filmed to look like a movie from the time period, and it really worked and felt authentic. Gretchen Mol was fantastic, as were all the secondary actors. Great performances from the entire cast.
And it was FREE because my library has DVDs!

I have never watched Dancing With the Stars before this season, but I'm hooked now. I really started watching because I love Kristi Yamaguchi (and her husband Bret - Go Canes!). But I really like Jason and Edyta too. He is H-O-T. I don't watch football, but maybe I should.
I'm now in my new apartment, with Verizon FiOS TV and Internet. They're not paying me to say this, but it rocks! Way faster than cable internet and the free on demand selection beats Time Warner Cable hands down. Now I just need a chair so I can stop eating on the floor with my plate on a box... The gradual move is nice, but not having somewhere to sit stinks.
I finished it a week ago, and I might have been able to write more then, but oh well. Read it, you won't regret it.

I started reading The Constant Princess because I loved The Other Boleyn Girl, but I quit reading 160 pages in because I couldn't stand it any longer. It was a glorified romance novel. Nothing like the other book at all. Even though I knew she was changing history to tell the story of Mary Boleyn, you could believe the motivations behind the characters' actions. I found her characterization of Katherine of Aragon to be overly simplistic and saintly.
Tomorrow is my first Saturday at the library. I'm a little afraid that we're going to get slammed since it's the day before a holiday. Well, I guess I'd better go get a good night's sleep.
The above is the Bravo version of a line in Bridget Jones's Diary. I've seen this movie about a million times, and the "clean" version leaves a lot to be desired. Some lines are so bad they just cut them out so you get a weird scene where a conversation is not finished. Why bother showing it? There are some pretty adult themes in the movie with or without bad language. If you're too young to hear the word "fuck," you're too young to watch any version of this movie. It did make me laugh when they replaced "blow job" with "back rub." LOL
